We motored out of Pendrell Sound by 9 a.m. It was a beautiful spot and we could have stayed longer but we wanted to try and connect with our friends for at least one night, and they were in the Octopus Islands. We made it to Heriot Bay and enjoyed bikini boating for the first time. It was hot, and I was tired by day's end. I was at the wheel a lot and at the helm you stand in one spot....(a chair there is a priority I think!)
I ended the day with a pub supper, beer on tap and a wireless internet connection and Lyle started laying teak floor in the cockpit. A man came by around 8:00 on the dock and gave us crab he had caught off of Savary Island. These boating folks are generally really friendly.
We met Oriental Dawn at Heriot Bay, (Lyle's racing skipper) and they were headed into the Octopus Islands also.
On Thursday we set out under an overcast sky for Waitt Bay in the Octopus Islands. We came through Beasley Rapids at slack tide. The current really moved us around! Glad we hit slack because there are rocks to avoid. We were glad to follow Oriental Dawn through.
We made our way into a pretty, sheltered and rocky anchorage and stern tied and rafted to Ron and Monica. They met us in their dinghy. We shared cold crab and got reacquainted. They had a wonderful trip and had made it as far north as Cape Caution.
We went for a little run in the dinghy and found a clean shallow cove where Lyle went for swim. Too cool for me though! A little creature (a mink?) raced across the rocks, jumped in the water and swam across the front of our dinghy and up into the trees on the other side. He was cute and unconcerned. Eagles are around us at every stop and there are ravens here.
Lyle has fashioned mosquito nets that clamp over our hatches. They work really well. It was the first buggy night we had. I fell asleep to the smell of cigar and campfire smoke wafting through the hatch. It made me feel safe as only familiarity can.
